Suicide Prevention Project

Back to Home

MYAN worked with the Maine Youth Suicide Prevention Program (MYSPP) from 2000-2007. Within those years we partnered with youth from all over the state to create products and materials and conducted research that serves to help reduce youth suicide in our state. Some of the results of this work include

  • the creation of realistic role plays for Lifelines (the statewide youth suicide prevention curriculum that is used in high school health classes),
  • CAL wallet cards (Caring About Lives) that are a convenient place to keep information about local suicide prevention resources,
  • a prevention poster,
  • book covers,
  • bookmarks,
  • public service announcements
  • research conducted by youth on where youth and adults get their information on youth suicide.

We are proud of the work that has been accomplished by the youth of Maine and will continue to recognize that youth input and insight into youth suicide prevention is essential to both reducing youth suicide and also increasing awareness of this important health topic. 2006-2007

MYAN worked in partnership with MYSPP and 6 SAMSHA partner schools/communities from 3 regions across the state to create materials that support cultural competency in regards to GLBTQ issues and youth suicide prevention. Check out the new MYSPP youth site,  that youth helped to create.  It includes resources and information for youth as well as all kinds of youth created products from the past.
2005-2006

MYAN and MYSPP worked with several schools including Bonny Eagle Middle School, Morse High School and Belfast High School and individual youth from Yarmouth and Freeport who created a variety of help seeking youth suicide prevention materials. Youth contributed to research and product development in a Region One Children's Cabinet project and these products are available on the MYSPP website. As always youth have played key roles in helping to prevent youth suicide in Maine.

See the Get Inspired Page for details on a youth who was inspired through her work with MYSPP this year.

2004-2005
MYSPP partnered with MYAN by working with 5 schools across the state to develop additional role-plays, provide feedback on a youth web page and create community education projects.

2003 Suicide Prevention Project

Youth from Foxcroft Academy and Wiscasset High School participated in the 2003 Suicide Prevention Project.

Wiscasset High School students developed role-plays for students in lifeline classes, to practice helping a friend learning how to show you care, ask the questions and get help.

Foxcroft Academy students created a warning signs card for student with possible warning signs of suicide, what you can do, the crisis-hotline phone number and a space to fill in local resources. Contact MYSPP at (207) 622-7566 ext 243 for information on obtaining warning sign cards or other help seeking materials or visit MYSPP's Website for more information.
